The LORD GOD says: I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed,

Meditation on the Verse for the Month

Dear Congregational Members,
Immanuel Kant, the philosopher from Königsberg (1724-1804), is quoted to have said: in all the clever books which he has read, he has not found anything as comforting as the well-known four words from Psalm 23, verse 4: Thou art with me. - "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me." Both, Psalm 23 and the Verse for the Month from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel, speak of God as the shepherd. In our technical world, where there are scarcely any flocks left, which are led from one pasture to the next, this picture loses its depth. We have a relatively romantic conception of what a shepherd is and does. In Biblical times, everyone knew that a flock of sheep is endangered by wild animals, robbers and steep paths. Everyone knew that the sheep leave the flock, get lost and perish. A shepherd had to pay attention constantly, know whether a sheep is missing, go after it and save it, sometimes risk his own life. A shepherd felt responsible, was prudent and concerned. When the Bible speaks of God as the good shepherd, it serves to show us how concerned God is. "I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the crippled, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will watch over; I will feed them in justice." God has a weakness for the weak, he does not give anyone up for lost, heals wounds, strengthens us from behind. That, which is good, he wants to guard. And altogether he wants to "feed in justice", as it is right and fitting for us. In this turbulent world, this is the comfort which we need. During this month, when we remember the dead, at this time, when daylight lessens and the nights grow longer, this message is exactly right – don't you agree? I am glad that the Verse for the Month brings God's promise before us. I am glad about these comforting and encouraging words at the beginning of this month. And I wish you, that you will not look in vain for this comfort elsewhere, but that, in the valleys of your life, you will immediately remember the Good Shepherd.
With sincere greetings and the best wishes for November,
your Pastor

Oberkirchenrat Weigand's visit in Retrospect

During the time from October 14th to 18th, Oberkirchenrat Peter Weigand visited our congregation. His visitor's agenda was extensive. He was a guest at the Bishops' Conference of the ELCIC in Niagara Falls to meet with Bishop Pryse and Bishop Raymond L. Schulz, National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada; he has met the acting Consul General in Toronto and has gathered information about the refugee work of the Canadian Lutheran World Relief. Furthermore, he has seen our nursery, taken part in a church council meeting and spoke with congregation members. He said that he returns to Germany with a very good impression of our congregation. He is glad about the work being done in the congregation and the good co-operation with the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). We thank Mr, Weigand once again for devoting so much time to his visit in our congregation, and we are looking forward to taking further joint steps into the future.

DELKINA-Conference in Edmonton

As reported, the meeting of the German Evangelical Lutheran Conference in North America (DELKINA) took place in Edmonton from October 9th to 15th. Mr. Erich Feyerabend, member of the Church Council and of the German Cluster, Mr. Schmidt-Ewald as congregation member and Pastor Wolf attended the conference, to which app. 30 representatives of German speaking congregations came from Canada and the U.S.A. It was interesting to hear about the experiences of other congregations. It is evident everywhere how difficult it has become to find the right German speaking Pastors or to finance the work of the congregations. Congregations getting older, social problems in inner city neighbourhoods in the vicinity of churches, for instance in Philadelphia, or the question how Services in the German language can be co-ordinated - Pastor Harold Popp reported on this - have occupied our conversations in and outside of our business meetings. Especially the EKD and younger colleagues voiced their concerns that the DELKINA must continue to be a connecting link between the German speaking congregations and the representation of interests opposite the Church Councils of the ELCA and ELCIC. The retreat program of the conference was good (Jasper National Park), but took too much time. The newly elected council (President: Andreas Wagner, Philadelphia; Vice-President: Katharina Möller, Guelph; Secretary: Holger Roggelin, Baltimore) plan to undertake a revision of the statutes and a more intense co-operation.

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
(Psalm 23, 1 + 6)

 Already one year …

On this occasion, we wish to thank all congregational members for the support and invite you once again to the parsonage, on December 1st, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., 3203 Gatliff Ave., Mississauga, (south of Bloor, east of Dixie). We look forward to see you!
