Monatsspruch für September 2001

Andacht zum Monatsspruch

Als ich den Monatsspruch für diesen Monat las, fiel mir sofort ein anderer Satz Jesu ein, den er einmal zu seinen Jüngern sagte: "Wenn ihr Glauben habt wie ein Senfkorn, so könnt ihr sagen zu diesem Berge: Heb dich dorthin!, so wird er sich heben; und euch wird nichts unmöglich sein." Und darum geht es, um einen Glauben, der wachsen kann, der ein Baum wird, so winzig er auch zu sein scheint. Um einen Glauben, der mächtig ist, ein Glaube, der Berge versetzt, so kümmerlich und klein und unscheinbar er auch aussieht.

Wie groß ist nun ihr Glaube? Ist er noch ein Senfkörnchen? Ist er schon größer geworden? Ist er groß und stark und unerschütterlich, wie ein großer Baum? Letzteres wünschen wir uns meistens, wir würden aber wohl kaum sagen: "Mein Glaube kann Berge versetzen." - Das Interessante ist aber nun, daß es Jesus in diesem Gleichnis und auch im Satz an die Jünger überhaupt nicht darum geht, den Glauben hinsichtlich seiner Größe zu messen. Auch das Reich Gottes wird nicht wirklich in seiner Größe beschrieben, wenn es hier heißt, es glich einem Senfkorn und wurde ein Baum. Es geht darum, daß Glaube, daß auch das Reich Gottes unter uns wachsen kann. Was es braucht, ist eine entschlossene Tat und – viel Vertrauen. Wenn wir immer nur vom Reich Gottes träumen, aber nie wirklich denken, daß es sich auswirken, wachsen kann in dieser Welt; wenn wir immer nur sagen: "Ja, wenn mein Glaube wirklich so groß ist, wie ein Baum, dann fange ich damit etwas an", dann verkennen wir, daß wir bereits alles haben, was wir brauchen: Auch ein (nach eigener Einschätzung) geringer Glaube, kann Berge versetzen. Auch das Reich Gottes, die Nähe Gottes in unserem Leben reicht aus, um diese Welt zu verändern. Es muß nicht erst mehr von "oben" kommen – wir müssen hier unten auf der Erde etwas tun, das Vertrauen, den Mut, die Courage haben, auch wirklich Glaube, Hoffnung und Liebe wachsen zu lassen. Nichts ist unmöglich! Also: Wann pflanzen Sie Ihr Senfkorn und lassen es wachsen?

Sommercamp – ein Rückblick

35 Kinder, 7 Betreuer, weitere Erwachsene und Familien, insgesamt 52 Personen – dazu gutes Wetter! Wir hatten eine gute Zeit am Golden Lake in Camp Lutherlyn. Neben Aktivitäten wie Kanu fahren, Ballspielen, Basteln, Schwimmen gab es sogar einen Besuch in einer Höhle und für die jugendlichen Teilnehmer Whitewater-Rafting! Auch das gemeinsame Singen und die Biblestudies kamen nicht zu kurz. Wir haben viel gelernt über die Dinge, die Jesus am Wasser, am See Genezareth tat. Wir hoffen, daß es allen Freude gemacht hat. Es wäre schön, wenn alle im nächsten Jahr wieder dabei sind!

Ein herzlicher Dank geht noch einmal an alle Betreuer für die großartige Hilfe!

Gemeinsames Erntedankfest!

Am deutschen Erntedankfest werden wir um 11.00 Uhr einen gemeinsamen Gottesdienst in beiden Sprachen feiern. Im Anschluß wollen wir ein Barbecue veranstalten und alle bitten, Salate für ein Salatbuffet und ein wenig Kuchen mitzubringen. Fleisch etc. werden wir besorgen. In diesem Jahr haben wir schon einige schon einige gut besuchte zweisprachige Gottesdienste gefeiert. Es hat sich gezeigt, daß es schön ist, wenn die ganze Gemeinde zusammenkommt und wichtige Ereignisse gemeinsam feiert. Außerdem ist am kanadischen Thanksgiving ein langes Wochenende mit Familienfeiern, an dem viele unserer Gemeindeglieder anderweitige Verpflichtungen haben. Ich hoffe, Sie unterstützen diese Idee, damit wir eines der wichtigsten kirchlichen Feste mit Groß und Klein feiern koennen!

TERRORAKT IN DEN U.S.A.   
 11. September 2001

Liebe Gemeinde,

alle stehen unter Schock nach brutalen Anschlägen in den U.S.A. Wir alle haben die Bilder gesehen, in der Zeitung und in den Nachrichten, und sind tief betroffen.

Ich möchte mich deshalb mit diesem Brief an Sie wenden. Ich bin der Meinung, daß es wichtig ist, zu wissen, was wir jetzt eigentlich tun können, wie wir als christliche Gemeinde mit den Ereignissen umgehen. Wir haben unsere Fragen, wir sind verunsichert, ängstlich – ja, vielleicht ist jemand unter Ihnen, der Familie, Freunde oder Bekannte unter den Opfern hat. Unser Respekt und unser Mitgefühl und vor allem unsere Gebete gelten den Betroffenen.

Des weiteren erschüttert der Vorfall unser Vertrauen in Sicherheit, und vielleicht sogar das Vertrauen in Gott. Die Frage, warum so Schreckliches passieren muß, was das Leben so vieler unschuldiger Menschen fordert und so viele Menschen in Trauer und Entsetzen stürzt, kommt unweigerlich. Mir persönlich ist klar geworden, daß nicht Gott, sondern verirrte Menschen diese grauenvollen Dinge getan haben. Es steht ganz und gar gegen Gottes Willen, wenn sich Menschen – wodurch auch immer – über andere stellen und sich zum Herren über Leben und Tod aufspielen. Das ist absolut verabscheuungswürdig. Fatal ist auch , daß diese Menschen durch ihre teuflische Tat nicht nur ihren Haß stillen, sondern auch unseren Glauben erschüttern. Das dürfen wir aber nicht zulassen. Geben wir dem Raum, dann stehen auch wir in der Gefahr, den Weg Gottes zu verlassen. Anzeichen dafür sehe ich, wenn Politiker von Rache sprechen, von Vergeltung. So berechtigt und nötig die Bestrafung von Menschen, die so Furchtbares tun, ist, so wenig ist es erlaubt im Gegenzug zu rächen, zu hassen, vielleicht selbst wiederum das Leben Unschuldiger zu vernichten. Wenn es in der Bibel heißt "Die Rache ist mein, spricht der Herr", dann meint dies, daß nicht wir rächen sollen, es ist Gottes Sache. Und wir müssen ihm überlassen, wie er dies tut, zum Beispiel im Jüngsten Gericht. Wir sind nicht Gott, auch wenn wir ständig in der Versuchung stehen,seine Stelle einnehmen zu wollen. Deshalb ist auch für uns Gebet und Gottesdienst wichtig, damit wir dieser Versuchung nicht nachgeben. Es war in diesen Tagen viel vom Krieg die Rede. Ich kann nur hoffen, daß dieser Terroranschlag nicht wirklich weitere Kriegsschauplätze eröffnet, nur um zu zeigen, wie stark, wie mächtig, wie unbesiegbar Supermächte sind, deren Macht nun in den Grundfesten erschüttert wurde. Wir haben uns als Gemeinde spontan am 12. September zu einem Gebetsgottesdienst getroffen. Das werden wir wiederholen, da nach dem ersten Schock das komplette Ausmaß der Katastrophe nach und nach deutlich werden wird. Deshalb ist unser gemeinsames Beten auch für Rettungskräfte und Politiker weiterhin wichtig.

Es ist außerdem unbedingt nötig, daß der innere Friede unseres Landes nicht gefährdet wird, indem zum Beispiel Moslime generell für den Terror verantwortlich gemacht werden. Tätliche Angriffe und sogar ein Brand an einer Moschee haben schon stattgefunden. Das dürfen wir nicht zulassen.

In diesem Gemeindebrief werde ich neben der Predigt des Gedenkgottesdienstes vom 12.09., Briefe von Bischof Telmor Sartison (ELCIC), Bishof Michael Pryse (ELCIC Eastern Synod) und eine Stellungnahme des Canadian Islamic Congresses abdrucken.

Ich hoffe, Sie wenden sich an mich, wenn Sie das Bedürfnis haben, über das Erlebte der vergangenen Tage zu sprechen. Wir werden in Abstimmung mit der Kirchenleitung über Hilfsprojekte informieren.

Das Bild übrigens ist beim Sunrise Service Ostern dieses Jahres entstanden. Zu sehen ist das Kreuz, das für uns immer auch ein Zeichen der Erlösung in einer unerlösten Welt ist, und die Silhouette Torontos im Hintergrund. Für mich drückt es aus, daß Gott über uns wacht, seinen Sohn in die Welt sandte, um uns von Angst vor den Mächten dieser Welt zu befreien. Diese Zusage gilt – trotz der furchtbaren Ereignisse.

Good and gracious God,

the defender of the innocent, the widow, and the orphan,

we pray for those who have been killed or injured in the tragic events in the United States this week. Grant your presence and your peace to their families and friends. Give hope and comfort to those bereaved, healing to those injured, and courage to those who are working in the clean-up and rebuilding efforts.

We pray for those who carry the rage that resulted in such an attack . As we confront violence at home and abroad, grant us the spirit of your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us. Help us to give our lives for others.

Give us the grace to work for peace with justice, to heal the divisions in our world and to find ways to live openly and honestly with one another under your reign. Join our prayers with those of your children around the world, through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Nächster Gebetsgottesdienst
3. Oktober 2001, 7.30 p.m. in der Kirche. Wir gedenken auch im Gottesdienst des Tages der Deutschen Einheit.

I like to welcome you all and thank you, that you have come here. We have opened up the doors of our church because we want to share time together in prayer.

We pray for the victims of the brutal and absolutely horrifying terrorist attack in the U.S.A. yesterday. We do this with the deep conviction that God is here for us in all our grief and sorrow, in all the hard and burdened times and also in times, when people suffer and die.

We have no answer to the question, why this has happened, but we need to be ensured and encouraged to believe in God's faithfulness, compassion and love he gives to all people of the world.

In this Service, we set a sign of hope, that God can do something for the families and the thousands of people who have been affected by this tragedy which took place near Pittsburgh, in Washington D.C. and New York. The facts given non-stop by Radio and TV stations are so terrible that one can hardly understand what has happened. Thousands of people were killed, including 300 fire-fighters, 200 emergency team members and over 70 policemen.

The only way we can react to all this is to spend blood and money and to pray for all these people who died, for their families, for the helpers who try to save lives in the rubble of the WTC Towers and try to bring life back to normal, knowing, that nothing is the same as before. God may lead us in our prayers and our thoughts, through his Son Jesus Christ, who reigns over all nations and peoples and who's kingdom is a kingdom of tolerance and love, and not of hatred and revenge.

God we thank you for the opportunity to speak with you, although it is hard to find the right words for all that has happened. We feel the anger and the shock about this evil attack. We feel with the families of the people who have died. Give us hope and peace in our hearts. Give us strength and comfort. Give us back the confidence in your power which overcomes all evil and pain. Be with us, o God, our Lord. Amen.

Dear Congregation,
surely we will never forget what has happened yesterday. The pictures which moved the world are carved into our brains, are burned into our memory. The aeroplanes which crash into the Towers of the World Trade Center, the collapse of the buildings, and, more than this, the crying and shouting people high up in the burning building and pictures of those who jumped in deepest despair and fear of a cruel death in the flames coming out of the windows.

No words can describe what happened, no one can really comprehend this situation. First I heard the news on the radio, then I was glued to the TV. At the end of the day the question was asked by a reporter, why this has happened. One psychologist who answered this question made a remarkable comment: It is Sept. the 11th, he said. That means 9-1-1. The emergency call, as you know.9-1-1. I was driven to open up my little German Bible. I opened up two texts. Both at Chapter 9, Verse 11.

11 Their king was the angel in charge of the deep pit. In Hebrew his name was Abaddon, and in Greek it was Apollyon.
12 The first horrible thing has now happened! But wait. Two more horrible things will happen soon.

Psalm 9, 11 (+12)
11 You rule from Zion, LORD, and we sing about you to let the nations know everything you have done.
12 You did not forget to punish the guilty or listen to the cries of those in need.

Yesterday three attacks have happened. I don't think that the text of the revelation is like a prophecy, but for me it was like a comment. And when I read further verses besides those I mentioned, the works of the evil were described there. I cannot go deep into it, but it is described like something which happens against God. All the brutality is earthly, demonic, human evil. It is not the will of God that such things happen. That was good advice for me, because I was immediately thinking: Why does all this happen? And here I found the answer: Because evil powers do this against God, not because he likes this, not because he gave the order to let that happen. People, and this is said hundreds of times in the books of the Bible, disobey God, don't follow the rules he has set, the Ten Commandments, for example, because they want to be God on their own, because they want to be rulers over life and death. If this happens it's cruel and completely opposite to God's will. Nobody is allowed to rule over the lives of other people, or to take other people's lives.

Then I looked in the book of psalms, Psalm 9, Verse 11:

11 You rule from Zion, LORD, and we sing about you to let the nations know everything you have done.
12 You did not forget to punish the guilty or listen to the cries of those in need.

I felt this was a comment to the situation too. It's the Lord who rules, nobody has his power, nobody can really be God, only the one who, of course, is God. You did not forget to punish the guilty or listen to the cries of those in need.

God does not forget those who cry and he will be the one who judges all bad deeds on the Day of Judgement. It is up to him to judge, to punish. That gave me the idea, that hopefully nobody will start a war after all this has happened, only to take revenge, only to state the power of the Superpower America. I fear attacks and condemn them, but I pray that the actions that follow will not cause a war.

Let us be careful in our actions and let us follow the path of righteousness, but also the way of trust in God's judgement. It is not up to us to stand in his place and to take over his responsibility. We can ask him for guidance and for inner peace. Let us pray for good communion with people of other beliefs and nations. Let us trust in tolerance and love. Amen.

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding will keep our hearts and our minds in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Sisters and Brothers in Christ, September 11, 2001

Today, through the variety of media that our grandparents never knew, we participated in a tragedy unfolding in the United States, but a tragedy that belongs to all of us. We are shocked, saddened and moved to tears by the human suffering and loss of life. We feel anger over such indiscriminate violence. We sense the loss of innocence and a loss to our security. Today, and in the days that follow, we must pray for our sisters and brothers who are in the forefront of this disaster. Through our prayers we join with them in their suffering and loss. Through our prayers we gain sensitivity to the tragic cost of their suffering, powerlessness and the violence they have experienced. Let us join together across this Church and with Christians in other places, in our worship and personally, in prayers for peace with justice for all people. We must pray and work beyond this story into a new story where, as Micah says,

Grace to you and peace in your prayers and your service in Christ's name.

Dear friends in Christ:

Grace and peace be unto you from God our Father and from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

On behalf of the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, I wish to formally extend my prayers and heartfelt condolences to those whose lives have been impacted most deeply by the horrific terrorist attacks that occurred within the United States earlier today.

Although it is difficult for us to bring any measure of understanding to these tragic events, it is vital that the Christian community continue to do what it can to affirm the reality of God's continued faithfulness and gracious intention toward the world. We will need to hold this truth especially close during these difficult days, confident in the knowledge that God is present for us in every moment of our history, both joyous and painful.

I would encourage individuals and groups within our synodical family to join with me in praying that God would grant generous gifts of grace and compassion to those who will minister directly with those most profoundly affected by this tragic situation. May the family members of the victims know that they are embraced by much love in these difficult days and may we never flag in our desire to tirelessly work for peace and reconciliation within the extended human family.

Stellungnahme des CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS

September 11, 2001

The Canadian Islamic Congress issued a strong statement condemning today's criminal acts against American civilians and their government.

"We are deeply, profoundly shocked at what has happened today," said a shaken Prof. Mohamed Elmasry, national president of the CIC. "Whoever planned and executed these heinous acts is insane. We can only hope and pray for the many victims and their families. And we emphatically urge the American government to tap all available resources to find out, sooner rather than later, who is behind this horrific attack."

But Elmasry also appealed to all media professionals, law enforcement personnel, politicians, and security agencies -- in Canada, the U.S. and globally -- to restrain from prematurely speculation on who is responsible for a series of mid-morning attacks that felled the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre, destroyed one section of the Pentagon, caused massive evacuations in major cities, and virtually shut down both the U.S. and Canada as each nation went to its highest levels of security alert.

Recalling the Oklahoma City federal building bombing -- which raised initial suspicions against foreign interests, but was later found to be the work of domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh -- Elmasry urged the media to exercise core professional ethics and refrain from speculating on who might be responsible for this latest and unprecedented tragedy that some U.S. officials are already calling an "act of war." Unfounded suspicion "will only endanger the safety of the ordinary Muslim, both American and Canadian," he cautioned. "We were all victimized in some way by the Oklahoma City disaster and this should not repeated."

The CIC is instead coming forward on behalf of Canada's shocked Muslim community to join in what promises to be a massive international relief effort. "For Muslims, even the taking of one innocent life is like killing all of humanity; it is against all we believe and are taught as children of God," Elmasry added. "Therefore, we are immediately coordinating our efforts with other Canadian humanitarian organizations, Muslim and non-Muslim, to give any aid we can to the victims of this tragedy."

Mrs. Wahida Valiante, CIC national vice-president, voiced the same feelings on behalf of the organization. "My heart goes out to all families who have lost loved ones today; with countless others, my prayers will be for the recovery of the injured. It is almost impossible to imagine the pain and sorrow these people will go through as they try to come to terms with this horrible tragedy and put their lives back together -- just as the victims in Oklahoma City had to."
